Wisconsin Film Credits

Well I now understand that The State of Wisconsin will be removing the Film Tax Credits (Film Wisconsin) The excuse being the credits do not bring the State money.
Funny that from Public Enemies to Fort Mc Coy we have had filming up and down the State. Investment made folks finding jobs. Good jobs with benefits some union jobs. IMHO Film Wisconsin did in the first year met all the goals set.
Before one cent was spend on rebating film production 100Ks + had to be spend on wages and other goods.
When the Film Wisconsin program is ended the films we could have had made here will go to the States that have the film credits.
Maybe we need to "bribe" Governor Doyle like our tribes did to get expanded casinos.
Maybe we need to be nice to the asshole Democrats in Wisconsin who talk about jobs then fuck the companies who want to bring them to the state.

I will be fighting this from happing I need your help. There will be more to come

Filmmaker Marketing 101:
Tips for filmmakers looking to get in the know

1) Have a MySpace or Facebook page (see two below). Be relevant; have friends that reflect you and your work. Your photos should reflect you. You can go for the devil horns look if you want. You might shock me, but I’m not giving you any work nor will I work with you, sorry…well not really.
If I have to wait more than a minute for your MySpace to load, I am not staying.

2) MySpace/ Facebook does not count as a Web page. Even a blog page is far better then just a MySpace or Facebook page. If you send pros to your my space....

3) Use Twitter. Follow those who follow you.

4) Do something. Do something for others. It's called networking. Try it.

5) The Son of God, Obama, is not going to give you $$ to make a film, thanks for asking. Try old school work and look for investors. Have a plan in writing and follow it. The SBA will help for free.

6) Blog and keep updating the blog. Note to self: read #6. Tweet about the blog. Cut and paste your blog into your MySpace.

7) Mentor others, even if it's the kid who wants to see what a filmmaker does. Make them an intern.

8) Support your local Film Fests (note IMHO); Milwaukee Film is too close to the old Milwaukee International Film Fest to be supported. Go for it if you want; your outcome might be better than mine with MIFF.

RDI Opening

RDI OPENING

So I went to the RDI Stages grand opening in St. Francis, Wisconsin on Thursday. It was an interesting time. LOTS AND LOTS of folk were there. My guess would be over 500 people in the main room and a few hundred in the other parts of the studio area.

Unlike so many other film events that I have been to in Milwaukee, FILM MAKERS were there (yes, really truly)…nice speeches by the politicians and it was good to see the Lt. Governor get the recognition that she deserves. She did some great things to make Film Wisconsin happen, not so much the mayor of Milwaukee. Of course he was there. I would have liked to have seen my Reps. there like Rep. Robin Voss and Rep. Robert Turner, who both moved heaven and earth to get Film Wisconsin passed (as well as helped with “It Came From Lake Michigan”).

Of course the hardest working actor in Milwaukee, William Zenobia, was there with his bride to be (best of luck you guys). I guess the film he is producing, “Into The Pit,” (the Story of Dead Pit.com) is coming along well. One of the best things I saw was Bill getting pitched to be in an upcoming film because his work and work ethic are well known. I hear that far too many "actors" do a great job in wishing versus networking. (Note to others—if you are looking to get film work, try letting others know what you can do for them.)

I got to meet some folks who are going to change the city of Milwaukee’s outlook on film, one being Tam Nguyen, who is leading the way with a great Web site: http://www.conduitcinema.com Check it out. We are very happy that he is helping us out at Darkside Films/ Darkside girls.

Another cat I met and talked to for sometime was Mr. Dwight Cannon Jr., a mover/ shaker with Creative Spurts (http://www.creativespurts.com). I also had the chance to talk to Mr. Dan Kattman of Lighting Rod, none better in Milwaukee, and yes, I did beg him to play a dead guy in one of his films. Good news is he agreed to be on an Indy Film Wisconsin Podcast!

Wisconsin Rocks! Now lets work to keep the Film Wisconsin tax credits going and to do what we can to contact Governor Jim Doyle and tell him, “Hands off the tax credits.”

Open Source Idea

The idea started after reading the Workbook project web page and newsletter., there I have read story after story and heard media creates who I have great respect for talk about how SHARING and working TOGETHER makes better end products.
And that joint efforts just makes sense. Further reading of the workbook project newsletter talks about why a media maker need to share more accurate financial information to those one is looking for to investment.
(Sidebar have a real web page My Space/Facebook does not count.)

This is a part of the process of Open Source INFORMATION is key. Small indy film has many roadblocks belive it or not open information removes same.

So a project I am working that will go public very soon will create a media project that will allow interested parties investors or not access to as much information as we can . Mind you some actors and crew do not want their wages known and we understand this.

What will you be able to get
budget information
shot information
Story Boards
how we are able to get the equipment etc.

The business plan as written.
Accounting information Other then steps needed to protect from ID theft etc.
our ideas for creating the universe that everyone will be able join via your own media work.
Yes our project will form the "rules" Good Guys bad guys shade of gray guys why they interact etc and if want to do something with it go for it.

Again crew and cast pay information will be off limits as well some companies doing product placement may not want to share that information we understand.
Yes my goal is that anyone on line can see how we are doing. Trust is made by information.

This project will be distributed by our self's we are TIRED of being ripped off and abused by distubters not looking to make money (we all have kin to feed) but to rip us off. Just this morning I heard a story about someone who paid a distribution company $5,000 up front then 50% AFTER marketing expenses!! (of corse there is nothing written about how much that is)
So we are planing to use WEB 2.0 to make distribution as easy and inexpensive as possible.
We have the power! We will use the power!

The gilmer of film making and Stardom is not worth your soul. Trust me. Dream act work hard yes. Deal with abuse put up with crooks drugs booze no. I can not tell anyone how to live your life, however in the morning light you can not look yourself in the mirror time to rethink.
If your life become a drama best seen after 11 PM on pay for view get the help you need. There is help out there take advantage of it, please.

Rip off companies

In the last few days I have heard story after story about film makers not getting paid after selling a film.
Mind you there are two sides to a story yad yada yada still
Film makers:
1) Have everything in writing
2) Have a lawyer look over contracts BEFORE you sign then
3) Check backgrounds and ask for references. If the company gets pissed off might be a reason they are not happy to provide them.
4) If a deal is to go to be true it is.
5) If the company starts not living up to their end use a lawyer sooner then later
6) Tell the world have facts to back it up.

One of the reasons these fools get by with this is no one knows about who they are and what they are doing

Note I am not a lawyer and do not play on on TV

The War on Hollywood

For far too long "we" have been fighting heaven and earth to claw our way to hollywood to make it big and be a star. A great home in the hills, Nice car and Eye candy on the arm and the rising star on the office couch.
Taking classes in film school hvy on art and little on how. Once out of school slaving as an intern hoping if we know/sleep the right folks one day maybe we can get a check.
So how did we get sucked into this? Are we just nuts?
Look we do not have to do this to our self's. For example in Racine WI you can be come a producer on the City Cable Access station for $60. Get training on how to use a simple video camera for another few buck and imoive too. Buy some minidv tapes your looking at a investment of less then $200 and a few hours of time.
The teck school here will train you in basic graphic stuff to design logos web design. Then all you need is the time to film something and put it on the air.
There are tons of web pages (see the links on this page) with more information. With today's equitment and accuess to that equipment take what you want.

Why SAG?

Thought. If I as an Indy Film Maker have a budget of say $150K. Why would I ever do anything SAG? Yes there some stars that are SAG that I could only get if I did say a SAG Indy thing but if my film will only get $$ for a star is my film any good? I think not.
Does SAG offer anything for the Indy Film Maker?
SAG IMHO is just like any other big union the top 5% get the $$ the rest are sheered like sheep.

The web in a short time will be the place to find your media entertainment. Film makers (not art film) should be making the plans to start the move.
The films will be cheaper to make
Less expensive to watch
Allows more to the marketplace of ideas

A good thing for everyone well maybe not some like SAG will power over members go away since the Hollywood system will be killed off. One will not have to go SAG to get good talent.
The funding will come I think not by investors more like TV advertising model or product placement.
Now what can we do today to get where we need to be?

So this morning on one of the lists I am on we yet again have a drive to take the moderator's class
and use the guy to help in film projects. Great I talked about this I am sure the list moderator is using the list to get him business.
The question was fake too that being mr. X has a film that he thanks will cost say 50 Million to make and he has meeting lined up with a bunch of high powered Hollywood types, and Mr. X wants to be sure of his budget. Why go to a YAHOO List vs calling one of these big shots and asking for help in this? Since Mr X has no IMDB credit or anything backing him as a film maker able to do anything, who is going to give him 50 MILLION yet alone $5? Now I am thinking questions to this Yahoo list a fraud too. Why am I not surprised?

I feel that the web is the place for beginning film makers to show their film. With all devices needing content ( PC's ,Ipod, cell phones, and game boxes) the demand is there and growing.
When you add that bandwidth costs are dropping making video distribution via your own web page easier and cost effective, becomes a no brainier.
The goal to achieve might even be create say a serial that can be downloaded for a fee and/or the complete show can be had on DVD with behind the scenes , interviews etc , for a higher price.
Fund raising for this type of effort is more like TV or radio ads then film investment model.

So spend some time on the film E lists I am on. Noticed something quite strange on one we have the same three or four folks not only answering the questions asked, but telling the list owner how great he is.
Wondering is the owner of the list using E Mail accounts he owns to create a sense of being THE GUY in Hollywood to learn from? ( You know take my class my Webaner etc) if so it that fraud?
I think I will send him an email and see if he offers refenice about his classes be interesting to see the answer.
Just be careful who/what school you sign up for a good resion to take classes at your local Tech school or CATV station.

Darkside Films is now planing to shoot both Frozen and Severed in the State of Wisconsin , mostly in the Milwaukee area. T
otal budget of the films is around 1 million dollars.
Mr Kahn chose Wisconsin after his visit to It Came From Lake Michigan Film Fest last year.

Partners With Screenwriting Veteran in New Company

New York, NY – October 3, 2008…NEHST Studios Founder and CEO Larry Meistrich has partnered with screenwriter Cary Abbott, USMC-Ret. to form GI Pictures. In a groundbreaking move, GI Pictures has developed the first program specifically for members of the military to access film and media opportunities.

Victim is the brainchild of stand up comic/writer/actor R. Michael Gull. First written by Gull as a short story in 1993, Victim is the tale of Vincent, a man whose concept of love is, shall we say, a bit skewed. He's not a monster. As a matter of fact, he could be your neighbor, your mechanic, or your child's teacher. He could be that guy with the flat tire on the side of the road, or the one behind you at night at the ATM.

After sitting on a shelf for over a decade, Victim has been fine tuned into a movie. This dark, disturbing tale is being told with director Jason Williams at the helm and cinematography by Michael Kubaszak. Featuring still photography by renowned photographer Jim Steinfeldt, and original songs written and performed by Olivia Barash (Repo Man, Tuff Turf, Little House on the Prairie, Fame, The Doors) and Binky Tunny. Film score by Brian Jones.

R. Michael Gull is an actor. In 2007 he appeared in the Tate Bunker film 'Perceval' and in 2008 you can see him in 'Victim' 'Indefinite', 'Haunted' and more. He is currently in production on a sci/fi thriller, 'Dust' and is in pre-production on another feature film to be released in 2009. This season you can see Michael on the new TV series 'Family Practice', on the Lifetime Network, as well as the final season of the NBC series 'ER'. Also a writer, Michael writes screenplays, has a catalog of over 100 recorded songs, contributes the blog 'Messiah Simplex' to the online edition of VITAL Source magazine and writes short stories.

Jason Williams is a full time student working towards a career in feature films. His previous film 'Meniere's Disease' was screened at the Wisconsin Film Festival, Wildwood Film Festival, WILDsound Film Festival and the Southside Film Festival.

Lark Slaughters Spooksmodel Competition

Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors 2008

As twilight slowly withered away the light of a Los Angeles Sunday, life still whispered within the body of the 2008 Fangoria Weekend of Horrors. Fans daydreaming eager visions of macabre beauty, harvested into the main ballroom of the Los Angeles Convention Center to witness the first ever Fangoria Spooksmodel contest.

Upon the stage, beauty embodied within an octonary of female flesh to stand before judge and jury. Each of the eight contestants endeavored to prove worthiness of wearing the crown of Fangoria Spooksmodel. One by one each answered questions, modeled a pose or two, and performed a one minute routine before a jury consisting of Ken Foree, John Gulagar, and Tony Timpone. Lest we forget an eager audience of horror fanatics surrounded by female flesh on its best, and sometimes erotic, behavior!

The eight contestants performed to the best of their abilities, demonstrating that each were well deserved to grace the Fangoria stage. Yet with all challenges, only one may walk away victorious. That one winner, clothed in scarlet dress and wielding a chainsaw, was Shannon Lark.

Shannon Lark of course is more than a blood splattered scream queen swinging power tools. She is a multidimensional creature. Shannon Lark is the cyber boss brains behind the horror website The Chainsaw Mafia, a place catering to information and networking for fledgling creative artists. Shannon also is a writer and director in the genre, spearheading the all female oriented Viscera Film Festival. One cannot chronicle Shannon Lark without summoning from the grave her involvement with the Living Dead Girlz, a female zombie dance troupe. Beneath all of the chainsaws, blood, zombies, and gore, she is perhaps one of the genres first horror activists. Shannon is on the front lines of the battle to advance the role of women in horror, something that is obviously being well embraced by fans and the genre in general.

As winner of the 2008 Fangoria Spooksmodel competition, Shannon will appear within all of the 2008-2009 Fangoria Weekend of Horror conventions, grace the pages of Fangoria magazine, and perform a Coffin Case photo shoot. It is quite a sweet prize. This success in reality is not just for Shannon Lark., it is a victory for all women hoping to bleed their name within the genre of horror.

This feature film was shot by local talent in Milwaukee, WI THIS WEEK! It was written by a new author of extreme talent! You’d be hard pressed not to agree with the common opinion that this Psychological Thriller “FLAWED,” has been described as a dissection of a serial Killer’s Mind. You will find out what happens when you’re forced to choose between your head & your heart.

“FLAWED” takes place in the Milwaukee area and surrounds the story of Nicholas Pierce. “Nick” is currently serving life in prison for the murders of five area residents. Four years ago, five random people went missing over a period of six months. They were considered missing & presumed dead. Nick was eventually arrested, but never confessed to the murders/whereabouts of the victims‚ bodies. However, after sitting in prison, silent, he is finally willing to talk. Why? … No one knows. One catch: He’ll only talk to his old friend/mentor; Professor Phillip Bradley - Criminal Psychology. Professor Bradley must attend the “interrogation” with a few of his current students. Nick hand-picked each student, through vague questionnaires, and plans on sculpting their minds as he uncovers the gruesome truth of his past. The film is both controversial & enlightening as it exposes “flaws” within the law!

Executive Producer, Nathaniel Ross, wrote the screenplay and is playing the main character; Nicholas Pierce. Director of Photography Mark Kagan, was the Assistant Director & Editor in the nationally released movie “Dare to Dream, The Alan Kulwicki Story. Marty Alivo is producing this film. Marty is also debuting his acting career as Agent John Mathews. Marty was the Production Supervisor , Art Director & Associate Producer also for “Dare to Dream” The Alan Kulwicki Story.

This film’s main actors are a collection of local, experienced, and “diamond in the rough” talent. Body:	We will be conducting two (2) casting sessions for HELL-EPHONE. The first will take place on Tuesday, March 11th at 6:30 pm at the Galaxy Center in Richmond. The second will take place at Saturday, March 15th from 11:00am - 2:00 pm at the Tate's Creek Branch of the Lexington Public Library in Lexington. We have roles available for people of all ages and types, there are many many roles available. I have attached a partial list. If you have emailed us a resume and headshot, thanks, we have it on file. If you have a headshot and resume, feel free to bring it with you. If you do not have headshot, please do not go to the trouble of having one made. We will take your photo at the session. There is no need for you to incur the expense. For those intetested in background acting or non-speaking roles, your audition will consist of the photo and a brief interview, and discussion of availablilty during the shooting schedule. Those interested in starring or featured speaking roles will also be expected to do a brief cold read, and possibly a screen test. To reiteriate what was said at the last production meeting: WE NEED A LOT OF PEOPLE, please get with anyone you know that is interested, and bring them with you. The film community is a very tight knit group. The last thing you want to do is to commit to a project then not show up or treat it as less than it is. I can not tell you how many times we have had an actor or crew member who tells us they have always dreamed of being involved in movies. They come to the set and then find out it is real work. Then, they never come back. It is a wonderful process but it is real work. Do not accept a role unless you can commit to it fully. The list of roles you received is informational only. It shows the vast types of roles available. Do not pick a character and think you are right for it. We will make those decisions. HELL-EPHONE will take three months to complete. ZP INTERNATIONAL WILL BEGIN CASTING FOR NEW PICTURE

We will be conducting two (2) casting sessions for HELL-EPHONE.

The first will take place on Tuesday, March 11th at 6:30 pm at the Galaxy Center in Richmond.

The second will take place at Saturday, March 15th from 11:00am - 2:00 pm at the Tate's Creek Branch of the Lexington Public Library in Lexington.

We have roles available for people of all ages and types, there are many many roles available. I have attached a partial list.

If you have emailed us a resume and headshot, thanks, we have it on file. If you have a headshot and resume, feel free to bring it with you.

If you do not have headshot, please do not go to the trouble of having one made. We will take your photo at the session. There is no need for you to incur the expense.

For those intetested in background acting or non-speaking roles, your audition will consist of the photo and a brief interview, and discussion of availablilty during the shooting schedule.

Those interested in starring or featured speaking roles will also be expected to do a brief cold read, and possibly a screen test.

To reiteriate what was said at the last production meeting: WE NEED A LOT OF PEOPLE, please get with anyone you know that is interested, and bring them with you.

We would ask that anyone attending, or bringing people in, please RSVP to edisondeathmachine@roadrunner.com or zpinternational@bellsouth.net and let us know which session you will be attending, and how many people you are bringing with you.
Please do RSVP us if you plan to attend or bring those interested in roles. This will allow us to block out our time better. If you are traveling a distance (an hour or more) please be sure to email me first as we might be able to discuss casting online or the phone. With gas prices the way they are I would rather have you here on the day of the shoot instead.

HELL-EPHONE is a very ambitious motion picture. It will be one of the most difficult movies we have tackled. So, knowing that, we ask that if you do accept a role that you be on set every time you are needed. The film community is a very tight knit group. The last thing you want to do is to commit to a project then not show up or treat it as less than it is. I can not tell you how many times we have had an actor or crew member who tells us they have always dreamed of being involved
in movies. They come to the set and then find out it is real work. Then, they never come back. It is a wonderful process but it is real work. Do not accept a role unless you can commit to it fully.

The list of roles you received is informational only. It shows the vast types of roles available. Do not pick a character and think you are right for it. We will make those decisions. HELL-EPHONE will take three months to complete. We shoot on Sat and Sunday and on occasions Friday night.

We must stay on schedule. The role you are chosen for (if you are chosen) will determine how many days you will be on set. If you can not be on set those days tell us.

Wisconsin Film Makers

The technical clean up bill for Wisconsin's film incentives has been introduced and its bill number is Assembly Bill 907.

AB 907, which is a bipartisan bill, would allow film production companies to transfer unused, non-refundable credits to other taxpayers, such as other film production companies. It would also phase in residency requirements for eligibility of film production employees for tax credits as the talent infrastructure needed for productions fully develops in our state.

A hearing has been scheduled for AB 907 before the Assembly Committee for Jobs and the Economy. Please take a moment to complete the following action items by no later than Thursday, March 6 at 10 am.

You may be asking, "Why am I receiving a flurry of e-mails from Film Wisconsin all of a sudden?" Time is of the essence as we are racing against the calendar to get this important legislation passed. The legislature will adjourn sometime in the next two weeks and they will not reconvene for this type of work until next year!

Action Items:

Register your support with the members of the Assembly Committee for Jobs and the Economy and thank Representative Patricia Strachota, the Committee's Chairperson, for holding the hearing.

Given: as we expand the industry, we must also expand the infrastructure to service the industry. New businesses will open and creative class individuals will move to the state. Until we grow our own talent we will need assistance from our colleagues in Illinois, Minnesota, etc. The average production needs 80-120 qualified crew members, a number that Wisconsin alone at present can not supply at present.

Fact: The movement to expand the current worker tax credit to include those from outside of the state has been undertaken for two reasons: First, so that we may service the increased demand. If we are unable to service these productions in a seamless and professional way, they will choose shoot elsewhere. Second, if out of state crew members are not counted, producers will not view our incentives as competitive.

Fact: The proposed change to the incentives has a sunset provision. In five years, a suitable-sized workforce will be in place and the inclusion of out-of-state workers will no longer be necessary.

Fact: Film Wisconsin has always been about both small, home grown, independent films as well as Hollywood blockbusters. There is a difference in scale of support needed for different sized productions. Film Wisconsin, in collaboration with Marcus Theaters also made it possible for Wisconsin independent filmmakers to have access to over 600 screens for exhibition.

Fact: Those interested in protecting the small amount of work in Wisconsin for just a select few to benefit are working at cross purposes with both those who want more opportunity to work, and with the state that wants more economic activity. The Film Public Enemies will be filmed in Wisconsin!
Yes the years of effort of the group that is now Film Wisconsin has paid off.
Public Enemies will be film in central Wisconsin around the Baraboo area (source tells me)
There have been casting call held in Madison.
My understanding is that the buget for Public Enemies is 50 to 100 Million.
This should have a huge impact for this area bring both short term and long term benefits.
Please remeber that .50 of every dollor spend on film stays in the local area.
This area of Wisconsin (My home town) could use an influx of money.
I am very proud to have been part of Film Wisconsin since day one. In fact I was the man who called the first meeting that day in Madison.

I had a talk with a friend of mine last week. Seams that there is an issue with the Film Workshops I do under Indy Film Wisconsin tag. My guy was unhappy that some of the presenters (who are giving up there time to present) are not to his level of professionalism. He also believes that this reflects badly on myself for if Mr X makes a fool of himself at a workshop makes me look bad too.
I am willing to take that risk, one would think with both the UW Milwaukee and MATC having film courses one of those two schools would be doing something they are not.
Or perhaps one of the "pro's" in Milwaukee would be doing something sorry no.
Guess that leaves me.
I plan to continue to present these workshops as long as I can keep folks to present and why not?
If the goal is to allow everyday Film Makers of all types to share what they know then that is the way I will do it. These workshops will allow film makers of all types too to network to see how they can help each other
If pro's like my friend do not want to come to the workshops than they will not, and we will see them at Sundance right?

A Look At The Torture Porn Genre

Torture porn. Gornography. Both of these words refer to one of the most maligned film genres in today’s film world. I am referring to, of course, the twisted works which depict graphic scenes of violence done onto other people. One only has to look so far to find some sterling examples, such as the "Hostel" series by Eli Roth or any of the "Saw" movie franchise. These movies take violence to a new level of depravity, vividly showcasing large amounts of blood and explicit images of what will happen to a human body when you apply various forms of destruction to it.
This genre started with quite a while ago, with the films of Italian schlockmeisters like Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci. They were the original torture pornographers, depicting brutal scenes of cannibalism, disembowelment, and murder. These films were not seen in the mainstream, however, and were usually relegated to any old theater that made its money showing all sorts of exploitation films. This style of movie gave rise to the "Grindhouse" movement, which was famous for its casual showing of nudity, violence, and buckets of gore. Several cities in America had at least one grindhouse theater, where you could see any sort of film imaginable, from gross-out zombie flicks to soft-core pornography pieces disguised as art. Many of these films tended to be short on production values and long on special effects makeup.
In the 1980’s, the "grindhouse" genre seemed to evolve into many of the modern day slasher films we know and hold dearly. Films like "Friday The 13th" and "A Nightmare On Elm Street" seemed to tap into sadistic reserves when coming up with new and intriguing ways to slaughter its victims. These films began in such a way as to root for the victims to rise up against adversity and destroy the killer. However, something strange happened along the way. The killers we were not supposed to like began to develop personalities. Suddenly, instead of supporting the victims, we began to pull for the killer. We hoped and prayed that the creative reserves of the intrepid writers would not dry up and continue to feed the teenage cannon fodder to our favorite masked or deformed psychopath. This began what is truly one of the most unprecedented moves in history. Now, instead of the good guys, we were identifying with the bad guy. We wanted to see blood, the more the better. We did not care how it happened; we just wanted to see death.
Torture porn has its roots that go even further back than moving pictures can claim to. Originally, there was a French school of theater called Grand Guignol, which aimed to have realistic scenes of blood and carnage. As time went on, Grand Guignol began to go overseas to Britain and even the foundling nation of America. Some of the first scenes of graphic violence are able to be viewed in D.W. Griffith’s "Intolerance", showing two scenes of onscreen decapitation and a scene where a spear can be seen piercing a soldier’s naked abdomen. American films began to adopt this style, going so far as being seen in mainstream theaters with films like "Blood Feast" and "I Spit On Your Grave". Of course, this style was only tolerated for so long, and soon splatter films like these were shunted to the wayside, becoming films in the aforementioned grindhouse" genre.
The first film to be labeled as "gorno" as it is sometimes called was Eli Roth’s "Hostel". In 2005, movie critic David Edelstein called Roth’s film "torture porn" when discussing the current trend in filmmaking. Since then, the moniker has been applied to such films as "Saw", "The Devil’s Rejects" and "Wolf Creek". Earlier films were also deemed to fit the bill, such as Takashi Miike’s "Ichi The Killer" and Virginie Despentes’ "Baise-moi". The things that make torture porn differ from the previous "grindhouse" and splatter films is a marked improvement in production values and mainstream distribution. Unfortunately for those with uneasy stomachs, torture porn has a marked financial viability that ensures that torture porn will be staying for a while. Author Stephen King has even gone on to defend both torture porn and "Hostel: Part II" when he stated, "Sure, it makes you uncomfortable, but good art should make you uncomfortable."
Is it really art, though? Have we as a society digressed to such a point in which entrails and rivers of blood can be seen as the next Warhol or Pollack? I am afraid I cannot answer that question. I do enjoy "Hostel: Part II" but no for the blood and guts. I like the human face it puts on these atrocities. It deals with what kind of person would pay money to kill another. I feel that it does raise some very interesting discussion points. The "Saw" series may have degenerated into a series of movies about how much blood one person can spill and still survive, but the original was a brutal exercise in Hitchcockian psychological horror. It got inside of your head and played around with it. Sure, the traps laid by the moralistic killer Jigsaw were violent and gruesome, but it all had a point to it. There was an underlying statement that said you had to appreciate your life as you have it, otherwise it may be taken from you in a matter you cannot control.
One of the most recent examples of this is a film that is not in distribution yet. I was fortunate enough to see the film "Seed" at the It Came From Lake Michigan film festival this year. The director, Dr. Uwe Boll, is best known for making movies about video games. However, with "Seed", he created what I consider to be one of the most disturbing films I have ever set eyes on. He takes a dark, violent world and looks at it with an unflinching eye, refusing to turn away from it. While most films of the torture porn genre have rapid cuts in the main torture action, "Seed" watches with us with a steady glare. It shows us not only violent acts, but what their consequences are on the main characters. I am sure that many critics will label this as an "also-ran" entry into the torture porn oeuvre, but I would hesitate to do so. Yes, it does show violence in an extreme way, but not with the often-nauseating levels of gore that others feel is necessary. The story actually needs the violence to work the way it does.
Now, most modern films could be filmed without the levels of violence that they have. The earlier horror film entries from such sources as Hammer Films or Alfred Hitchcock show that blood is not needed to scare. Surely, the denizens of the dark are much more frightening than someone being eviscerated with a power drill. The fear of what you do not know will always trump blood in my book. However, torture porn not only shows extreme acts of sadism, but it almost encourages us to delight in them. I attended a screening of "Saw II" when it arrived in theaters, and was both intrigued and disgusted by the almost sexual reaction the crowd was having to the violence. In a society like this, it is almost no wonder why violence and rape statistics have gone upwards as these films continue to proliferate their messages of destruction. I am sure that there is a defendable point when it comes to the torture porn genre, but I cannot see it. As long as these movies continue to rake in box office monies, there will be more and more blood arcing it way across movie screens near you.
In closing, let me say that I, in no way, condemn or applaud the efforts of these filmmakers. Just because I do not enjoy these films does not mean that they will not titillate some of you out there. I just hesitate to condone films like these and defend them as art when they do not serve a purpose. Yes, movie fans, art does have a purpose. If a movie can elevate you as a person, it could be considered art. If a movie urges you to become a better person, this too could be considered art. However, just because a movie can make you throw up your designer lunch does not make it art. True art does not have to be comfortable, but it does need a purpose other than trying to one-up the previous guy.

Read below about a Film project shot in Green Bay, WI

Green Bay, Wisconsin is an unlikely place for a film community to pop up, but that’s pretty much what happened. The Independent Filmmaker’s Guild started up in December of 2004 and making it possible to network with other non-professional, wannabe movie makers. The possibility of getting something done tends to get easier when you find there are plenty of people ready to help- even something as crazy as making a movie.
When I tried to make my first feature in 1996, an ill-conceived, poorly written comedy that nobody understood, there were only a few thousand things that could go wrong. Most of them did and the movie sits in a back closet of my house, on ¾ inch tapes- a format I can’t easily upload to my mighty Mac and edit at a leisurely pace. What’s the diff anyway; the movie would still stink and instead of being a curiosity it would be confirmation that my skills, whatever they might be, hadn’t taken up residence yet.
It also cost me a butt-load of money that I couldn’t afford to throw away- and that was before I had a wife and two kids.
Paul Rinehard was responsible for that debacle, but only in a roundabout way. I’d worked with him on one of his films, "All You Can Eat," the year before and realized that it wasn’t impossible to make a movie in Titletown. Paul even managed to find a distributor for "All You Can Eat," driving the idea that there might be a payday at some point too. I don’t blame Paul for those ideas getting into my head- he didn’t put them there- but it sure did irritate me for a long time that he was able to finish with a coherent picture and I was left with a whole bunch of… well, poop.
What was I to say when Paul asked me to produce a movie for him? I can’t say I jumped at the opportunity. Not that I doubted him in the least, it’s just that I had a project of my own I’d hoped to get started with in the next few months. Either that or move to Florida. I couldn’t decide which would be a better use of my funds.
Eventually I gave Paul a straight answer: "Maybe." I just needed to read the script. I did and thought it showed lots of promise. Paul and I spent months getting it ready to shoot, with Paul doing all of the hard work. I made suggestions and even helped steer a thing or two, but all the writing was done by Paul- even the bad jokes that sound like something I would have said.
Casting is the area that I take the most pride in on this film, mostly because I got exactly the cast I wanted. I either coerced or convinced Paul that I knew the perfect actors for his movie.
Tiffaney Dantinne was someone I knew from IFG. I knew she was talented and knowledgeable about filmmaking. When I knew she could do better than her first audition (early morning after a weekend bender I’m guessing) I suggested she audition for Paul with another actor. She did much better and earned the part.
I went to college with Shad Bever and always wanted to work with him on something. He’d ignored my advances for over a decade and probably only accepted this role because he found out I wasn’t directing the movie myself.
Sadie Rinehard didn’t get her role because she was Paul’s daughter, she got it because she did a great audition.
Barb Alloy and Kathy Hardtke were two ladies that Paul and I had both worked with before and were hoping to bring into this dysfunctional family. Fortunately they were both willing and able.
There was a lot of discussion about the overall look and feel of the film. Paul and I both believed that for DAMAGED to work it had to be unsettling from beginning to end. I’m a big fan of "N.Y.P.D. Blue" and the style of camera work that Greg Hobblit brought to it that first season. I’d also enjoyed Paul Greengrass’ hand held camera work in "The Bourne Supremacy," and believed that the style would work for our movie as well. The rapid fire editing would make Peter Hunt hold on for dear life, but it was exactly what we needed for this movie to work. It certainly didn’t make it easier.
Most of the feedback has been positive, though you’ll always be able to find dullards who lock everything down on a tripod. Me? I love the Bogen, but not for this movie. DAMAGED is meant to be a disturbing experience. We never want you to be a fly on the wall- we want you to be in the room with the psycho killer, looking for a shadow to hide behind.
Shooting started in October of 2006 and lasted for five weeks. We did have one minor hiccup- one of the people who was raising money for us wasn’t delivering. The money that he assured us would be available was going to make the whole shoot easier… if it actually was available.
A week before we were going to start Paul asked me if I thought we should wait for the money. I decided to not wait, mainly because we had a schedule and the actors and crew were fired up to get started. I didn’t want to throw out a speed bump, even if it meant I’d be paying for the shoot from my own pocket. It’s a good thing we started without the money since we’d still be waiting.
The shoot went remarkably well, possibly the smoothest shoot I’ve ever been involved with. The weather cooperated with us and Paul’s house remained standing while we shot there. My stepmother left town for a weekend and we "spilled blood" in her bath tub- a grizzly shot that appears in the movie for about three seconds.
Our cast and crew came through in spades; top notch work from every single person. Craig Knitt and I split the shooting (with his new Canon XLH), Scott Willems recorded the sound for us and Paul’s sons were our P.A.s.
Post production lasted five months longer than we wanted. Chris Opper and I edited 95% of the movie, then Craig came in and polished it up, added the bells, whistles and special effects. Robert Graf added a few digital effects that I defy you to find- they blend so seamlessly into the practical video. The result is a movie we’re very proud of.
The premiere was held on August 26, 2007 at the Meyer Theater in GreenBay. The first twenty-five people that showed up were at least sixty years old- hardly the audience we imagined. By showtime we had 240 people, half a dozen of which didn’t remain until the end credits. We took it as a sign that we’d done something right.
So now it’s a year later, we have a great movie and I’m broke. I’m sure fame, fortune and gainful employment are not too far away but so far a commercial sale has eluded us. But then it’s only been four months since we premiered. I’m sure Kevin Smith sat on "Clerks" for years… right?
No… Oh well. I think we have a better movie.

Thanks for everyone who showed up to The Film Workshop sat the Astor in Milwaukee yesterday! Bonus points to Ross Bigley and the great Maureen Cashin Bolg of Actor's Craft for teaching. Bounis points to Mr. Hall for great news abot his project. Please check out the Milwaukee Short Film Fest I will be a rocking good time.
I will be going to a longer format on the Blog Talk Raido Show and I will be looking to raise the bar on guests.
In fact I got an Email on Friday accusing me of coping the format of another Podcast, funny since until now I have only talked to film folks around Wisconsin not only film makers but authors as well.

Theatrical Runs Offered for Wisconsin Productions Marcus Theatres, one of the largest chains in the country, to provide screensMILWAUKEE - Jan. 11, 2008 - Wisconsin's new 25 percent tax credits for the film, television and video gaming industry just took effect Jan. 1 making it one of the most attractive packages in the nation. In what may be a first in the country, a Wisconsin-based movie theatre chain has significantly upped the stakes by offering feature film productions shot in Wisconsin guaranteed theatrical runs on some of its screens. This innovative arrangement was made between Milwaukee-based Marcus Theatres and Film Wisconsin, the state's film office, as a way to support building a film economy for the state and encouraging filmmakers, especially independent producers, who most stand to benefit by bringing their projects to Wisconsin under this arrangement. "This innovative agreement demonstrates the very kind of creative thinking that makes Wisconsin the ideal place for the film industry and, for that matter, any other creative sector business," said Lt. Governor Lawton, who chairs the Wisconsin State Arts Board. "It will allow us to display the beauty of our great state and the talent of our people on the big screen - 600 big screens in six states, in fact - and it will lift Wisconsin into view regionally and nationally as the new 'Third Coast.'" "The value of our incentives combined with the pledge of theatrical runs by Marcus theatres significantly increases the desirability of shooting in Wisconsin, said Scott Robbe, executive director of Film Wisconsin, the state's film office. "It's becoming an increasingly difficult and arduous task to bring a project to the screen. By offering filmmakers a guaranteed commercial theatrical run for their work, coupled with our incentives and our untapped potential as a film location, we anticipate a significant influx of creative projects coming to the state. Theatrical screenings give a project enhanced credibility and visibility and provides greater marketing legs for auxiliary markets." In a letter to Film Wisconsin, Bruce J. Olson, president of Marcus Theatres, wrote in part: "Marcus Theatres will provide the foundation bookings that may lead to multiple playdates from other theatre circuits in major markets across the Midwest and U.S. . . .the number and play dates will be determined by the final quality and appeal of the production."While retaining the right to refuse screening a film, Marcus Theatres "will make all reasonable efforts to accommodate the filmmakers request for bookings" on film receiving a G, PG, PG-13 or R rating. FYI I was born in Baraboo WI. (A film that "will" be shot around Baraboo will be 50-100 million)

A film maker is someone who has made a film and put the film out there for others to see.
Wisconsin has a few. I am blessed to know some of them.
A wantabe is someone who talks a good game or wishes that the goverment or some other person or thing will come around and do it for them (with a big check at the end of it) and would never send a film off to a fest (It is just not right) when given a chance to help others do not follow up leaving projects in the lurch. I know a lot of these folks too. (good also at making art films)
The trouble is that the wantabe's are good at geting power over what others create. Thank God over time they blow away.

"Aside from the post-production work on the feature length comedy Port of Call, we have several other projects in the pipeline here at the plush, well-lit offices of Mutant Barmonkey Productions. We have the short, Little Cabbages All in a Row, as debuted at It Came From Lake Michigan, slightly re-worked and winging its way to Australia for a horror fest. A documentary featuring Wisconsin micro-brews is just being launched as well as dark drama which is currently in development. The details of the drama will have to remain under wraps for now but hopefully the cover can come off later this year. Lot's o' work, that's for certain.

We're also looking at the 48-Hour film shoot next weekend (just a possibility) as well as another short of the thriller variety.

From if you want to get your film made just do it. If you wait for Mr Hollywood producer to come to you...
Do the local 48 project. Do Wis Keno start your own Keno. Why not why let anyone tell you what you can do?

Talked about the group who is dis the Film Wisconsin Production Guide IMHO simply becuse that group is worried about losing marker share. Got news for you, your actions have put you outside what you could be sharing do not think that because you have done high leval work for Wisconsin that the productions are going to be calling you.

I am quite proud to have been one of the handfull of folks to help make this go down. Meeting Scott Robie, Dave Fantal (Visit Milwaukee) and the man who rocks the most George Tzougros (Wisconsin Arts Board).
Others like William Zenobia jumped it to help where he could and started Film Forward to help spared information.
Great group of guys.

On the flip side there seem to be a handful of nay Sayers who I believe think if they can not be number 1 no one will. Sad thing. They create there own guide (of course made up of their pals) and claim better work.
Too bad they sat here(Bitching) as others on there own dime traveled to theAmerican Film Market to promote the whole state vs just their little group. Folks Like Scott rock as others stand with feet of Clay.
But that is just the way things go in Milwaukee.

Now that I got that off my chest I am very excited about what Film Wisconsin is going to do for the whole State.

Indy Film In Wisconsin

I am planing on this to be my newsblog of what is going on with Indy film in the State of Wisconsin.
As we move forward into 2008 and the beginnings of the Film Tax Credits we will see films of all sizes come to the Badger State.
Indy Film In Wisconsin will try to bring you the most up to date information on films in all stages of production. However Indy Film In Wisconsin will be focusing on films under 5 million in costs.
IFW will be bringing news of new Video Games as much as we can since more and more Video Games will be much like film.
This in no way should be thought of a take off of Film Forward. IFW backs Film Forward 100%.
